Based between Basel and Stalden, I am a Swiss artist working in painting and ceramics. My artistic education began in 1987 at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste (HFBK) in Hamburg, where I studied painting under the guidance of Werner Büttner, Franz Erhard Walther, and Martin Kippenberger. From 2003 onwards, I shifted from figurative painting to abstraction, and the concept of the “Core” emerged as a central element of my practice. Guided by the question of the existential core, my work explores the relationship between abstract and natural visual languages as well as the interplay between the microcosm and the macrocosm.
In 2023, I extended my practice from painting to ceramics, allowing my artistic research to move from the two-dimensionality of the canvas into the three-dimensional space of sculpture. Within the framework of an intensive study program and continuous professional exchange in the field of experimental ceramics, I focused on the ancient Chinese technique of celadon. The craftsmanship of this old asian tradition combines harmonious form with technical precision and serves as a fundamental source of inspiration for my work. Engaging with Chinese high culture and early ceramic art opens up essential structural and existential questions, which I explore in my works through colour and form. The deliberate investigation and continuous challenging of the technical boundaries lead me to the primary compositional themes that shape my artistic approach and are reflected in the balanced arrangement and precise technical execution found in Chinese ceramics.
The celadon glaze allows for the development of a subtle luminosity, conveying purity and fragility, while the delicate crackle reveals the transience of the material presence. Instead of unfolding on the flat surface of the painting, the fine network of cracks drapes over the ceramic form like a second skin. Built by hand and carefully traced along the rotating figure with a profile template, the sculptures embody universal archetypes. Each figure is an event that is experienced, sensed, and crafted to give expression to the deeper self.
In pursuit of a timeless original form, I focus on capturing the essence of a figure and opening hidden spaces. In doing so, I consciously step beyond my Western cultural framework and establish a dialogue with a contemporary perspective. The immersive work with clay between my fingers, combined with a reflective engagement with historical and cultural contexts oriented toward the future, cultivates a profound awareness of the cycles of human existence, from which I bring my works into the world.
